In the world of compact crossover SUVs, there are many contenders for the crown. Ford Edge is a perennial favorite, but Toyota RAV4 gives the Ford a run for its money. Is one better than the other for your needs? What sets each one apart? In this review, well help you make an informed decision by comparing Ford Edge to RAV4 and declaring a winner.

Ford Edge

Our comparison begins with Ford Edge. Its a spacious SUV with plenty of rear seat space for taller passengers. It seats five people in comfort, as well. The Ford has a pretty wide stance for a compact crossover SUV, and that translates to a more confident ride on a wider variety of surfaces.

In terms of engine options, you can choose from the base inline four-cylinder engine, or you can upgrade to a V-6 engine for more performance (at the cost of some fuel economy, of course). With the base engine, you get an estimated 21 mpg in town and 29 on the highway.

In terms of cargo space, youll find that Ford Edge offers around 40 cubic feet with the second-row seats up, but that expands to almost 74 cubic feet if you lower those seats.

Toyota RAV4

Toyota RAV4 looks similar to Ford Edge, but it is actually narrower and shorter. That size difference translates to a significant reduction in legroom for second-row passengers, so anyone who will be carrying taller people in the second row might do better with the Edge.

RAV4 is also only available with an inline four-cylinder engine, although it is rated for 26 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway, edging out Ford Edge, although it comes with less overall power and there is no larger engine choice on offer. Another point in Ford Edges favor is that the drivetrain does a much better job of delivering power to the wheels, thanks to the higher torque of the system. That means you get more power where you need it (on the road) and less of it is wasted.

RAV4 only offers 37 cubic feet of cargo space with the second-row seats up, and only 69 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats down, so those with more hauling needs will find that Edge is a better choice.

Ford Edge a Clear Winner

Ultimately, Ford Edge and Toyota RAV4 seem very similar at first glance. However, those similarities are superficial. They are actually very different vehicles and do not really go toe-to-toe in all areas. For our money, Ford Edge wins out over RAV4 in pretty much every category.
